CARE SERVICES

Our care services

We provide residential care, dementia care and respite stays. Our approach is calm, observant and respectful, with familiar routines and personalised support. Every resident is treated with dignity, individuality and genuine warmth.

Residential care

Residential care here means help with the everyday things that have become harder at home: washing and dressing, taking medication, eating well, and having company through the day. Our carers are trained to give medication, and all meals are cooked fresh in our own kitchen.

Before anyone moves in, we carry out a full assessment with them and their family, and with anyone already involved in their care, so we can be sure we can meet their needs. From that we write a care plan together, which the team adds to every day. We share an update with residents and families every three months, and sooner if anything changes.

The Oaklands is registered with Care Inspectorate Wales as a residential care home for up to 18 adults. We do not provide nursing care; when a resident needs a nurse, or at the end of life, the district nurses or Macmillan nurses visit the home.

Dementia care and memory support

Many of the people who live here are living with dementia. Our manager trains every member of the team in understanding dementia, in person, here at the home. Familiar faces, a settled routine and a Victorian house laid out like the homes our residents grew up in all help people feel at ease. Memory games and “on this day” sessions are part of every week, crockery contrasts with the tablecloths so it is easy to see, and the home and patio garden are secure, so people can move about freely and safely.

Respite and short stays

A respite stay gives your relative a safe, comfortable place to stay for a short while, perhaps while you take a break or while things are arranged at home. They have their own room and join in daily life like everyone else: meals in the dining room, activities in the lounge and time in the garden.

We carry out the same assessment and care planning for a respite stay as for a permanent move, so the team knows how to care for your relative from the first day. That is why the weekly rate for respite is a little higher.

Care needs and visiting healthcare

GPs visit when they are needed and call each week to review residents. Our medication is supplied by Broadlands Pharmacy. District nurses visit to support residents with diabetes care, wound care and blood tests. We can also arrange for residents to see a dentist, optician, audiologist or chiropodist here at the home.

We also provide end-of-life care. When a resident is coming towards the end of their life, we work with their GP, the district nurses or Macmillan nurses, and their family so that, wherever it is right for them, they can stay at The Oaklands, cared for by people they know.
