LIFE AT THE OAKLANDS

Life at The Oaklands

Life at The Oaklands is relaxed and homely. Residents enjoy home‑cooked meals, gentle activities, warm companionship and peaceful time in the garden. Our home is designed to feel safe, comforting and supportive.

A typical day

Each day here has its own rhythm. Breakfast is served between 8am and 10am, in the dining room or in your own room if you prefer. Lunch at 12.30pm is our main meal of the day, followed by dessert; if you would rather have your main meal at dinner time, we can arrange that. At 3pm there are home-made cakes, and tea time is usually something lighter, such as sandwiches, soup or a toastie, with a dessert.

We have two lounges. The main lounge is where most residents like to sit, and where our activities take place. The quieter lounge is there for anyone who would like to watch a particular programme, film or match, or who wants somewhere calmer. It has a piano, which we sometimes play for entertainment.

Meals and home cooking

Our meals are home-cooked and seasonal, made with high-welfare British meat. Every Monday we go through the week’s menu with residents, so anyone who would prefer something different can choose an alternative, and we are always glad to hear new ideas.

Teas, coffees and biscuits are offered through the day, with water and squash always to hand. If families would like to bring in snacks, we will label them and keep them in their relative’s room or in the fridge.

Food hygiene rating: 5 (very good). Bridgend County Borough Council, inspected 28 May 2026.

Activities, outings and visitors

Activities

Our notice board shows what is coming up each week. Activities include memory games, quizzes, gentle physical games, crafts, singing, poetry reading and favourite shows from years gone by. We also look at what happened on this day in years past, which often starts a good conversation.

A singer visits on the last Friday of every month, and a church service is held in the dining room after lunch on the fourth Sunday, for anyone who would like to join in. Your pastor or priest is welcome to visit for other services.

Outings

We plan outings each month, such as a meal out or a drive to the coast or up the Bwlch.

Regular Visitors

Our hairdresser comes in every Wednesday, and a chiropodist every six weeks. You may also meet Winnie, a puppy belonging to one of our team, and families are welcome to bring their own dogs when they visit.

Visiting services

We can arrange for residents to see a dentist, optician or audiologist here at the home, and other services can be arranged as needed.

The garden

Our garden has a fish pond and plenty of places to sit. On a fine day, residents like to sit outside with the newspaper and enjoy the fresh air, and in summer it is a lovely spot for visits. Anyone who enjoys gardening is welcome to join in, and we plan garden activities around it.

Family involvement and residents' meetings

Every Friday we hold a residents’ meeting. It is a chance for residents to tell us what they think of the home and to suggest ideas for meals, outings, entertainment and activities.

Families are part of life here too. Each resident has a key worker, who will let you know if new clothes or toiletries are needed, or pick them up if you live further away. If you cannot visit often, we can arrange regular video calls so you can still see and talk to your relative.
